Science Workshops

Calling All Science Teachers…

The importance of bringing variety to science lessons plus ensuring content is engaging and memorable is fundamental to optimising science lessons for your students. Science is an exciting subject but can be a complex world for many children, meaning it is often difficult for students to easily digest and remember key learning outcomes and a challenge to teach. Timstar aim to ensure workshop content is not only curriculum-aligned but as engaging for students and teachers alike.  Whether teaching key stage 3, 4 or 5 Timstar workshops will equip your teachers with experiments and equipment that will focus and engage your students, enriching lessons and making science education easy to absorb and retain.

Our carefully developed workshops offer schools the option to select a ‘Teach the Teacher’ workshop or ‘Teach the Student’ lesson. The latter meaning our team will deliver lessons for you.  All workshops are available as a teacher focused and student focused option.

Detective Science: Solving the world’s biggest mysteries

DNA Fingerprinting using PCR and Gel Electrophoresis

When it comes to understanding some of the world’s biggest crimes and mysteries, it’s science that gives us that crucial quantitative data we need to convict, rectify and resolve. This workshop educates and introduces students to the world of molecular biology, evidence-led, real-world inquiry-based experiments and procedures using ‘Polymerase Chain Reaction’ (PCR) and gel-based electrophoresis to solve the mysteries behind real-world scenarios. From understanding theory to hands-on practical’s and analysing results, the DNA Fingerprinting workshop will equip you and your students with curriculum-aligned learning outcomes for GCSE and key stage 5 microbiology.

Invisible Science: Beneath the naked eye

Visualising Science

Microscopy and the ability to see beyond the naked eye has enabled scientists to unravel many of the world’s anomalies and mysteries since the late 17th century. Incorporating visualisers into science lessons will enable an even deeper level of analysis and visualisation Chemistry, Physics and Biology experiments.

This hands-on practical session enables you to try out a variety of activities and experiments you can take back to your classroom - from Growing crystals and micro-displacement reactions under magnification to Brownian motion and measuring the heart rate of Daphnia using a visualiser.

You will have the opportunity to try out the experiments and learn how to enhance them with the use of visualisers, minimising teaching time whilst maximising learning time through ‘whole class’ viewing plus powerful imagery and recording features such as time-lapse and image freezing.

Analytical Science: Reality strikes

Wireless Datalogging

The information age has significantly switched the mindset and behaviours of new generations coming through our education channels. Datalogging makes the tracking and analysis of data quick and easy to absorb. Providing real-life scenarios to students, coupled with the added advantage of wireless technology, not only makes data logging fun but syncs perfectly with the narrowing concentration span of today’s student and the hardware they are familiar with.

This workshop dives into real life situations logging, tracking and analysing vital data, such as finding earthquake survivors using an infrared sensor to the effects of chocolate/caffeine on heart rate.

We also understand time pressures, increased workloads, rising student numbers, and budgetary barriers curtail hands-on science practical lessons in relation to time and cost. To alleviate some of these pressures one low-cost, intuitive system can deliver a wide range of exciting and engaging Physics, Chemistry and Biology practical lessons. Data logging technology allows students and teachers alike to enhance learning, encourage scientific reasoning, problem-solving and creative thinking.

The purpose of this workshop is to allow the opportunity to discover how easy this technology can synergise the science theory with the science practical allowing data to be captured, stored, displayed, and reported with the latest in wireless sensors.
