PYROLYTIC GRAPHITE

This remarkable material is a form of specially deposited graphite that has extreme diamagnetic properties. It is strongly repelled by both the N and S poles of a powerful magnet and can exhibit this behaviour by levitating over a group of rare earth (neodinium) magnets.

Quantity:
To make the material levitate, a small piece - typically less than 1mm thick and 6mm square - is placed above a minimum of four square or circular magnets whose poles are arranged to give an alternate N/S pole configuration. A matrix of magnets can be assembled to give a larger levitation bed and a trial levitation kit is available here, containing 16 magnets (4x4 matrix) together with a steel base plate and a sample of graphite.
Please note: The material can be cleaved into even thinner sheet using a sharp craft knife and can be cut into smaller pieces by scoring and cracking. Sheet size: approx: 35mm x 20mm x 0.5mm
